Decorating your home is an exciting way to breathe fresh life into your space. Once you get to your living room, you’ll probably get a huge sense of accomplishment that the big stuff is done. And then you look at your empty coffee table and realize something’s missing.
Decorating a coffee table can be that extra step to tie your entire room together. Or, at the very least, it’s another place where you can show off your style and personality. It can be hard to know where to begin. But, we’re here to help. Check out our list of 4 style ideas and prepare to put the cherry on top of your living space design.
1.) Know What You Want to Get Out of Your Coffee Table
Your coffee table is arguably going to be the most versatile piece out of all your living room furniture, so even before you’ve started designing your table, you need to understand every way it can function. To do this, try to envision different groups sitting around your coffee table, from a huge group of guests to just you. In each scenario, your coffee table is doing different things, so you need to design with all those scenarios in mind. For instance, if you’re an entertainer, it may be a good idea to avoid having a ton of accessories on your table that can’t be moved easily. Or, if displaying trinkets are your thing, consider putting them on a tray for effortless storage. The possibilities are endless, you just need to think about how your table is going to function and go from there.
2.) Make Your Design Personal
This one may seem like a no-brainer, but it is so important. Your coffee table is an extension of your overall living room design. Embrace your style and apply it to your coffee table. Are you a bookworm? Display some of your favorite novels or periodicals on your coffee table to start a conversation. Do you love puzzles? Keep some handy so you can complete them with friends or on your own. Is minimalism more your style? That’s great too. Just find the perfect touches that prove less is more. No matter what, fill your table with everything that screams “you”.
3.) Bring the Outside in (Even If You Don’t Have a Green Thumb)
Designing the perfect coffee table involves going out and up and there’s no better way to do both simultaneously than to add a little green into the scene. Adding plants to your coffee table is a simple thing you can do to add a fresh touch to your entire living room. Deciding what plant to showcase is up to you, but keep a couple of things in mind. Make sure your plant can survive with little direct sunlight, make sure it’s not too big, and find a plant that can survive at your level of plant expertise. And if you don’t have a green thumb, consider starting out with a beginner plant that you can easily nurture, like a succulent. There’s also always the option of getting a fake plant to take the maintenance aspect out altogether.
4.) Maintain Balance
One key principle to remember when decorating a coffee table is to maintain balance in every aspect of your design. Like walls and rooms, your coffee table can begin to look too cluttered if you have a couple elements too many on it. One thing you can do to alleviate this is to avoid putting too many things on the table altogether. Make sure you play by the rule of threes, especially if you have a rectangular table. Look at your table from different angles so you’ll know that your table is balanced on all sides.
And our last piece of advice is…don’t stress and have fun! You’ve started a new design adventure with your home and you should enjoy every minute of it. Be sure to take our tips and style your coffee table to create the perfect display for your living space.
