Let’s be honest – summertime is best spent doing something you enjoy doing. If you’re a movie buff, that will include watching old and new films that fill you with joy. If this describes you, we have a suggestion. Why not make your movie night themed to the season and screen one of the many summer movies we all love?
Since there are so many to choose from, we wanted to call out the most quintessential summer movies out there. Check out our list of classic summertime films that you should watch this season (and all year long)!
Grease and summer go together like rama lama lama ka dinga da dinga dong (which translates roughly to perfectly). This movie is a fun family classic set in 1950s Americana. It centers around Danny Zuko and Sandy Olsson (Sandra D. if you’re Rizzo) who, after a summer of romance, reunite when Sandy moves to Danny’s town. We think it’s one of the best summer flicks to watch because there’s singing, dancing, romance, and poodle skirts. What’s not to love?
Dirty Dancing is another one of those 1980s classics that you always stop to watch when it’s on TV. In this film, Baby Houseman and Johnny Castle become an unlikely couple, on and off the dancefloor, over one summer at a Catskill resort. It’s a great movie because it has it all: scenic landscapes, a forbidden budding romantic, and, above all else, Patrick Swayze. Dirty Dancing is a must-watch, so nobody better put it in the corner.
Who hasn’t heard someone say, “You’re killing me, Smalls!” at the top of their lungs? You have The Sandlot to thank for that. It follows a summer spent among five young boys whose love for baseball and hijinks make them fast, and forever, friends. It’s iconic in its own right, but the chase scene between Benny and The Beast skyrocket it into the summer movie hall of fame.
National Lampoon’s Vacation
Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo star in this movie that has embedded itself into comedy history. In the film, their family takes a road trip and, in true National Lampoon-style, things go wrong at every turn and hilarity ensues. We highly recommend this movie if you want to be in stitches for the rest of the night.
Jaws is as synonymous with summer as it is with horror. This movie is about a behemoth shark that terrorizes the small coastal town of Amity Island. It’s one of the only summer horror films that we continuously reach for when the weather starts getting warmer. If you’re brave, we dare you to try to watch this in a pool – it’ll add another level of creepy!
