We sat down with interior stylist and photographer, Anita Yokota, to talk about her recent backyard redesign. Learn how she created her gorgeous outdoor space below!
Anita Yokota and her family have lived in their suburban Orange County home since 2003. Anita had always dreamed of having a large backyard where her children could make memories, and this house was perfect for that. But, as her children grew, the entire family began to spend less and less time in their backyard.
“I realized we really didn’t go out there anymore. And I wanted to bring all of us out for the summer and beyond.” – Anita Yokota
To remedy that, Anita wanted to redesign the space to make it more functional for any future family gatherings. Anita is an interior stylist and photographer, so the redesign came easily for her. She began by taking in the flow of the backyard to survey, observe, and take notes on the positives and negatives of the area. Next, she thought about what was worth keeping and, conversely, what wasn’t working for her and her family any longer. She then started editing down the furniture that needed to be replaced and looked for pieces that would fit into her eclectic, yet California-centric design aesthetic.
She went with many pieces in Joybird’s outdoor furniture collection, including the Lido Outdoor Lounge Chair and the Kinsey Outdoor Dining Set. Luckily, Anita was already familiar with Joybird’s brand and furniture because she had incorporated some of their pieces into her home. She fell in love with the quality that goes into each of Joybird’s pieces and the continued commitment to producing mid-century modern furniture that can work in any home (or backyard!)
“I am a lover of all things mid-century modern and Joybird is the epitome of quality-made MCM furniture. The Collins chairs in my home are extremely comfortable and add the MCM flair I wanted. So, it made total sense to choose Joybird for the outdoor patio. All our friends and family can’t believe it’s the same space because the furniture is so modern, fresh, and comfortable!” – Anita Yokota
After building a bespoke mid-century modern fence and adding outdoor cushions, the backyard was complete. The finished product is clean, modern, and beautiful. Her backyard has multiple sitting areas that are perfect for eating, talking, and spending time with loved ones. Anita created a space that effortlessly flows from one area to another and we love how she was able to do that while maintaining clean lines. We honestly can’t get enough. When asked what her biggest piece of advice would be to someone going through the same redesign process, Anita said:
