A key portion of Meghan Dyal’s home renovation was the “playroom.” See how she managed to transform this under-utilized room into a perfect kid AND parent-friendly space.
Meghan Dyal (known on instagram as @ahoynative) has transformed her 1960s ranch house into a charming, modern haven for her darling young family. But even as every other room came together in Meghan’s vision, the playroom continued to be the one space that she could never quite complete.
“The playroom was an old garage that the previous owner converted into an actual room and it has been kind of a catch-all over the last year,” Meghan explains. Having moved to this house from an 800 square foot apartment, this 300 square foot “bonus room” has always felt like a little luxury, even though it was clad in wood paneling and unflattering carpet! To give it a quick refresh, Meghan and her husband immediately gave it a good coat of white paint upon moving in. This brightened up the space and just opened up the room.
“We knew immediately we wanted it to be a space our kids could play and relax but also wanted it to be functional and not look like it was overrun by kids,” says Meghan. “Basically, we wanted the whole family to be able to use and enjoy the space!”
However, as other room renovations and stylings took priority, it was a full year before they ripped out the carpet and replaced it with a durable laminate floor. This flooring helped to modernize the room, but they made the decision to take things up a notch and warm up the room with wood floors to match the rest of the home. Meghan wanted the space to be cozy, modern, and functional, so that meant adding in additional layers for texture and color.
Meghan admits that “one of the boldest things we’ve done in our entire home was paint one wall in the playroom/office black. Originally my husband was pretty skeptical but I convinced him it would really elevate the space so we did it. We love it now!”
That black wall offsets the room’s custom wall-to-wall desk, and served as a jumping off point for bolder color-palette decor decisions, namely our Joybird Preston Sectional in Bella Forest, which the family brought in as their seating selection of choice. Meghan gushes that the sofa feels like it was practically made for the space, and in a way, it was!
The room’s overall look has a fairly sophisticated “home-office” vibe, but is still perfect for coloring, homework, or general playtime! It’s a room in which all family members can feel comfortable, kick back, or get work done. And for a bonus room, that’s quite a pay off!
