Best Cities for Interior Design in the U.S. in 2019
You’ve probably guessed this already, but the Joybird team are huge fans of all things interior design. The interior design industry is always changing and setting the stage on what is trendy for a home and we’re excited when we’re able to collaborate with interior designers to help them design the perfect space for their clients.
In order to be successful at interior design, it’s helpful to live in a design-forward city that continuously pushes the design envelope and provides inspiration for its designers in different ways. But that begs the question: what are the most design-forward cities in the US?
To answer that question and more, we conducted a data study to identify the top 50 cities for interior design based on various design-related criteria. So, check out our list below and keep it in mind for the next time you’re looking for help on a design project!
After crunching the numbers it looks like Seattle is the top city in the country for interior designers. It makes sense – Seattle is consistently named one of the trendiest places in the country. Rounding out the top five cities are Denver, Milwaukee, Jacksonville, and San Francisco. Other cities making the top ten best cities for interior design include Salt Lake City, Los Angeles, San Diego, Portland, and Charlotte.
Interestingly, five out of the top ten cities are located on the West Coast, making this region the best overall for interior design. So, if you want to break into the industry, we recommend starting there.
We also wanted to recognize the many design-forward cities that didn’t quite make the mark for the top 10, but are still great places for interior design. You can check out the comprehensive list below to find out where your city ranked.
Cleveland was sadly featured as the very last city on our top 50 cities for interior design list with low scores across the board. Oklahoma City, Pittsburgh, Hartford, and Minneapolis follow closely behind to make up the bottom five cities for interior design.
Well, there you have it! The West Coast is the best place for interior design, with Seattle being the best city overall for this creative skill. The interior design industry is ever-changing and always interesting and we love seeing all the new innovations that come out of it firsthand.

In order to determine the best cities for interior designers in the US, we utilized data from EMSI to rank all metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs) with a population of more than 1 million people on these criteria:
- Number of interior designers per capita
- Number of new hires for interior design jobs per capita
- Number of home furnishing stores per capita
- Median hourly wage of interior designers
- Percentage growth in interior design graduates from 2013 to 2016
