For photography business owners Amber and Josh, their home is the place where they live, work, and homeschool their kids. Spending the bulk of their time in this space, the couple wanted to give their home a peaceful bohemian-meets-mid-century feel conducive to both work and play.
When planning the decor for their home outside Nashville, Tennessee, Amber and Josh knew that they wanted to create an aesthetic with minimal clutter or distractions. The task of running their photography business from the space, plus home-schooling their two young kids made it paramount that their interior felt calm and serene. It had to be a place where the family could work and play together with ease.
For Amber, the key to creating this mellow-vibe was in the color palette. In an effort to keep things light and airy, she chose white for all the walls and used walnut woods in the furniture to add warmth. Mostly dark decor details are punctuated with pops of natural color from the family’s large assortment of plants. “My mom used to have plants in our house growing up,” Amber explains. “So that’s very nostalgic and sentimental for me.” In choosing the color for their Hopson Corner Sectional, the couple decided to go with Taylor Felt Grey to keep the look from feeling too dark or heavy, and allowing the styling flexibility of a neutral shade.
“I love that my entire family, including our dog, can sit on the sofa without having to feel crowded. It’s a space we can all really share.” – Amber
Seeing that their home was built in the mid sixties and is furnished with a wealth of vintage furniture – including a 1950’s Formica table and chairs in the kitchen, passed down from Josh’s grandma – newer mid-century-style furniture fits into the style of the home perfectly. Mixed with Amber’s bohemian sensibility, the interior has a beautifully balanced look – not too retro, but with plenty of heart and family history.
