Our Favorite Books From This Past Month
One of the things that the Joybird team loves more than mid-century modern furniture is sitting down and reading a great book (especially if that book was stored on the Owen Bookcase!) That’s why we wanted to round up five of our recent favorites so you can see what we’re reading. Are any of these books lining your bookcase?
The Great Alone – Kristin Hannah
The Great Alone is a historical novel that takes place after the Vietnam War. A father moves his family to Alaska to start a new life. But, instead of solving all of their problems, they are only brought out into the open on the frontier as winter approaches. It’s a tale of love, loss, vulnerability, and family that will hit you at your core. If you pick this book up, be warned – it’s a tear-jerker.
On the Come Up – Angie Thomas
From the best-selling author of The Hate You Give, On the Come Up follows a girl who has big dreams of making it big…or at least making it out of her neighborhood. Angie Thomas explores themes like hip-hop, family, and how to stop at nothing to reach your dreams. If you loved The Hate You Give, you’ll love On the Come Up, so don’t hesitate to pick it up.
The Outsider – Stephen King
Stephen King is the master of suspense and The Outsider is no exception. This novel starts with an investigation into the tragic murder of a young boy that pits a town against each other and then grows to be something larger than life. King explores humanity, or the lack thereof, with an interesting sci-fi twist that is guaranteed to make you want to keep reading.
I’ll Be Gone in the Dark – Michelle McNamara
True crime fans, this book is for you. I’ll Be Gone in the Dark is about the late Michelle McNamara’s, who unfortunately passed away before she could finish the book, crusade to bring the Golden State Killer to justice. McNamara weaves a fascinating and utterly devastating tale and her journey to find the GSK’s identity. Her writing and thorough research will leave you wanting more, especially now that the killer has been caught.
The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up – Marie Kondo
Marie Kondo and her tidying methodology have taken the world by storm. So, it’s only fitting that we went right to the source to read her best-selling how-to guide. We recommend The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up to anyone who needs extra motivation decluttering their world. Trust us, you’ll be glad you picked this one up.
