Co-presenter of the popular Brain Candy podcast, Sarah Rice, wanted to give her beautiful home in Orange County, California a quick revamp and create a colorful space for conducive to work and play! Joybird stepped in to help on both accounts. Have a look at the before and after…
If you’ve never given the Brain Candy Podcast a listen, allow us to give you the Cliff Notes version – it’s like a sugar rush for your intellectual side. Hosted by Susie Meister Phd, and Sarah Rice, this dynamic duo covers everything from the science of gift-giving to the neurosis of inspiration. It’s witty, honest, and hilarious. As with most creative endeavors, the duo needed to create a work-studio that was functional, but also fun and inspiring. This studio space happens to reside in Sarah’s home, so the opportunity to give her living space a makeover as well was too tempting to resist!
A lover of bright, punchy colors, Sarah’s home maintains a neutral color palette for the floors and walls but dials up the saturation in the furniture, accents, and decor. This tendency towards the brighter side made Joybird the perfect place for her to find bold and stylish seating pieces for her living room.
“I’m pretty colorful on the inside and I’ve always wanted the outside to match, and the same goes for the house I live in too!” – Sarah
By already having a beautiful set of mid-century modern dining chairs in the open floor-plan of her living room, Sarah was able to complement their retro lines and bright green shade with a pair of equally stylish Soto Chairs in the tangy hue of Vibe Sunkist. Adding yet another color to the mix, Sarah off-set these chairs with our Eliot Apartment Sofa in Essence Aqua, which serves as the perfect little love-seat for this warm and welcoming space!
The assortment of fabric shades gave Sarah the opportunity to add her favorite bold prints and patterns in pillows and decor as a way tie the whole room together in a kind of pop-art aesthetic that’s fun and playful.
“I try to have a sense of humor with things that I add-in, like little decor elements,” Sarah explains. A self-proclaimed plant lady, she balanced out the clean mid-century style with plenty of greenery to allow for a bit of a natural vibe. But that humor comes through in her cheeky assortment of colorful vases and planters! She finished things off by swapping her cowhide rug for a more mid-century shag option, which suits the room perfectly. The entire space reflects Sarah’s own laid-back yet exuberant personality.
The studio began as basically a no-frills workspace, much in need of a dose of color and creativity! The biggest challenge was finding a way to keep all the podcast equipment accessible, but optimize the layout to allow for some stylish seating. By switching out the l-shaped desk for a long and narrow table, Sarah was able to add in a pair of smaller-scale Soto Apartment Chairs, along with our Korver Sleeper Sofa, giving the studio space the multifunctionality of a guest room as well!
What began as a drab, luck-luster office, was given a boost with the rich woods, and turquoise tone of the furniture. Not only does the gallery wall pop more, but somehow the room looks brighter. It’s amazing what a little color can do!
