From worn-down dive to Brooklyn beauty, this apartment blends classic details, with tech-savvy features in a style that’s serenely chic.
When Wendy and her husband Brendan first moved into their 1930’s pre-war apartment in Brooklyn, they could see right away the space needed pretty substantial renovating. The initial state of the apartment was terrible, with many of the original details falling apart after years of wear and tear. The kitchen and bathroom needed complete updates and the compartmentalized floor plan lacked the open feel the couple wanted.
But with modern technology and an eye for potential the pair were able to create exactly the home they envisioned. Brendan used his skills as a 3D artist to design their complete renovation before any work began. As a financial planner, Wendy put her stellar organizational skills into play, managing all their home projects.
“We tried to keep the apartment true to original period of which it was built,” explains Wendy, shying away from changing too much when it came to the details. They managed to uncover original tiling and moldings, buried under layers of paint, which they then did their best to replicate. They also pulled back a few walls, allowing a more spacious and open floor plan.
“There’s something special about appreciating the original details.” – Wendy
When it came time for decorating, the couple opted for simple statement pieces and understated decor. The Soto Chair was a natural choice for their living room, as was our Eliot Sofa. They intentionally chose a neutral color palette, allowing the color within the space to mostly come from their lush assortment of plants and bright oil paintings scattered throughout.
Despite staying true to the pre-war space, Wendy and Brendan didn’t hold back on integrating modern technology into their home. All of the lights, fans, and thermostat are wifi enabled, set to turn on and off at certain times. Every detail is tailored to the couple’s lifestyle, giving their apartment a truly customized feel. It’s a space that suits them perfectly, located right on the park and, with the holy trinity of appliances (dishwasher, washer, and dryer) it’s truly a New York gem!
