Samantha Klein is not only the mastermind behind the popular vintage shopping app Whurl, she also has a keen eye for bringing bright colors and unique pieces into her interior design. Step inside her darling dining room, complete with whimsical accents, retro-inspired custom wallpaper, and a totally original color scheme.
Samantha Klein is the kind of person who knows what she likes and isn’t afraid to own it. A patron of vintage clothing and vibrant tones, it’s no surprise that her Glendale home is decorated with the same whimsical gusto apparent in her impressive wardrobe, which is made up of mostly vintage, or vintage-inspired pieces.
“I’ve worked in fashion as a buyer since college but my passion has always been with vintage specifically,” Samantha explains. “I love how every piece is so unique and comes with its own story. Also, the quality of vintage clothing is just lightyears ahead of most manufacturing today.”
She’s built a splendid collection of vintage clothes over the years, but her passion wasn’t confined to her own closet.
“One day I decided it was time to try my hand at my own business and I launched an app that aims to solve the challenges vintage shoppers face when trying to find that one special item,” says Samantha. “You can post requests for what you’re looking for and vintage sellers browse through and upload a match when they have one. Users can also upload items to sell the same way you would on any other marketplace.”
As a retro-expert-entrepreneur, Samantha seamlessly walks the line between past and present, vintage and modern. And this darling dichotomy translates to her home design in the same cheery, colorful way.
“We bought our 1928 Spanish style home two years ago and absolutely love it,” she says. “It’s definitely not in perfect shape, but we embrace the imperfections and fix the stuff we can’t stand!”
Samantha divulges that she prefers mid-century design, but likes to mix that aesthetic with modern motifs, while staying true to her home’s Spanish- style. An avid collector, she doesn’t shy away from vintage trinkets and displaying them proudly throughout her home (which she shares with her husband and two pet corgis.) For her, designing with bright colors has always been second nature.
“Once we moved into our home, we actually started incorporating more muted tones and if anything that felt riskier to me,” Samantha says with a laugh. “When we bought our Joybird couch in grey two years ago, I was so hesitant because of how not colorful it was and wondered how it could even possibly fit in my house, which sounds really funny, but it’s true! Of course, when it arrived it was the perfect complement to our bright living room and the addition of a few neon pillows definitely helped.”
With her dining room, Samantha wanted to create a bold statement wall and did exactly that with some custom-designed wallpaper taken from a pattern on one of her favorite vintage dresses. This groovy floral pattern serves as the perfect backdrop to our own Unson Media Console, where she can stylishly stash anything from serving ware to her enviable collection of sunglasses.
“I’m such a firm believer in loving your space and making it right for yourself (and family) and nobody else.” – Samantha
Augmenting with accents like a hip, colorful artwork, retro placemats, and even a miniature carousel horse, Samantha has created a unique space that goes far beyond what one might think of as a traditional dining room.
Her tip for anyone hedging the idea of creating a colorful space of their own is to just start small and build from there.
“If you’re just dipping your toe into discovering your own bright style, start collecting inspiration from magazines, Pinterest, Instagram, wherever!”
Brimming with bright hues and hip homespun style, Samantha’s dining room is certainly a space you cannot help but love!
