Modern is among our favorite design styles because it can work for a variety of esthetics and tastes. But how do we define modern?
You may have heard friends say they have a “modern style,” or they prefer a modern design esthetic, but what exactly is modern? In truth, modern style has a wide range of interpretations, but when it comes to Joybird’s handcrafted furniture design, we’ve narrowed it down to two distinct styles. Our merchandising manager, Gifty Walker, takes us through the modern trend according to Joybird…
“For the Modern Purist look think urban loft, with a clean and minimalist style. This look is industrial chic with highlights on metal and glass materials. It tends to mix clean lines with raw elements, and is a homage to minimalist interiors fused into modern day living. The Modern Purist style is simple, functional and proportioned with a neutral and uniform color palette.”
“If committing to a strictly minimalist esthetic is a bit too demanding, Modern Versatile is the way to go. This is a more lived-in modern design scheme in which modern pieces are mixed with other more traditional or eclectic elements for a balanced esthetic. It tends to be a carefully curated mixture of furniture styles to include classic, bohemian, and even some mid-century modern pieces. This look is popular for its timeless elegance, its inclusion of personal touches, and it exudes a simple sophistication. Modern Versatile generally introduces more of color in the space, although in most cases, it sticks to an established color scheme.”
