Meet two rocket scientists with their feet on the ground and a color palette that’s up in the air. Tour their modern, minimalist, space-inspired family home near the beach.
From the tree-lined street of their sleepy Redondo Beach neighborhood, the Toepel’s two-story house looks pretty traditional—right down to the white picket fence. But once you step inside and see the bright coral playroom, an electric blue living room and a cardboard spaceship in the dining room, it’s clear this family knows fun.
Damaris is a rocket scientist and Jim is a rocket scientist turned video game designer, so science and rocket launch days are just as important as family movie nights in the Toepel household. The couple met at the Kennedy Space Center, while working on the space shuttle, and they have two little astronauts in training, their daughters Celia, 3, and Natalya, 10 months.
I like to call our interior design style garish minimalism. Several times I came home from work and there was a new color on the wall, which is totally cool.
To say the Toepel home is brimming with color is something of an understatement. The wall colors vary from electric blue to coral to deep plum, and their living room is a literal “rainbow room” complete with LED lights and a rug that displays the full color-spectrum. Their orange Joybird Hughes U-Chaise Sectional fits perfectly with both the fun feel of the room and their playful lifestyle.
