Summer vacation is something that people look forward to all year long. But once it’s here, they likely spend most of it indoors, at a desk, reminiscing about how much fun summer used to be when they were kids.
When was the last time you took a day off from work or school to press pause on your busy life and enjoy a couple of days without your typical responsibilities? Summertime should be about slowing down, soaking up the sun, and doing joyful activities. And we think it’s time that we start making those things a priority.
The first step to having more fun during summer is to, simply, carve out time for it. Make weekends sacred by setting boundaries on how outside forces use your time. You can do this by silencing your work email during the weekends or saying “no” to some time-draining requests. And, hey, if you have the time, why not take a day or two off during the week to take advantage of those other five days too.
Next, think of some ways you can make the most of your free time. This might include picking up a new hobby, taking a trip, or getting together with some friends to enjoy an activity you’ve never tried before. We’re always fans of going outside of comfort zones, so we recommend option three. If you need a little inspiration, don’t worry – we’ve got you covered.
Take Your Hangout Outside
If you want to enjoy something a little more lowkey, grab some food, drink, and comfortable decor, and host a hangout with friends outside. If you like reading, set up an outdoor rug and some pillows, lie back, and let a good book take you to a far off land. If you enjoy playing music, throw an impromptu outdoor concert. Whatever you do, be sure to enjoy the warm weather and the company you’re with to the fullest.
Host a Summer Tea Party
If you’re looking to do something that’s more of an event, why not go back to being a kid for the day and host a summer-themed tea party? All you’ll need to do is pick up some yummy food from the grocery store, brew some of your favorite iced tea, and set up your party table with flowers, a table runner, and a few subtle decor items.
Share a Toast to the Season
If you’d like to do something a little more grown-up, you can’t go wrong with an outdoor happy hour. Happy hours are one of the best luxuries of adulthood, so we’d wager it will definitely be a hit among your friends. (Just be sure to share a toast to your friendship and the amazing summer moments you are all sure to share in the coming months.)
So how do you summer? Hopefully, it’s by making time for yourself, and your friends or family, to take in the world around you. Whatever you do, make sure to enjoy it to the fullest – after all, the weather is only nice for so long!
