Cookbooks have been around for a long time, but recently, there seems to be a huge amount of them being released every day. This year alone, hundreds of cookbooks have been published in the United States and even more are slated to be released before the year is up.
Cookbooks are appealing to a wide range of demographics for a variety of reasons. They are great for avid home cooks to have because they encourage them to create even more culinary creations for their friends and families. Cookbooks can also inspire even the most serial Postmates user to get into the kitchen and try their hand at something new. And, at the very least, cookbooks can act as an easy decor item if placed strategically on a shelf or bar cart during an at-home event.
But, out of all of the cookbooks that are released year after year, have you ever wondered which are the most popular around the U.S.? We certainly did, so we conducted research to find the most popular cookbooks in each state. To get our figures, we used Google Trends to explore search data over the past year for the top 100 best-selling cookbooks from Barnes & Noble. We then separated those data points out by state and created the graphics below to display our findings.
Are you following the trends? Check the graphics below to find out!
Many of the top cookbooks that we found centered around living a healthier lifestyle, so unsurprisingly, around 1/3 of states are looking for cookbooks that lend themselves to cleaner eating. In that same vein, 31% of states searched for diet-related cookbooks which another 16% of states favoring cookbooks dedicated to vegan recipes.
Another insight we were able to gain from our research is the popularity of cookbooks written by celebrities and influencers. An impressive 29% of states’ top-searched cookbooks are written by celebrities like Reese Witherspoon, Joanna Gaines, and Chrissy Teigen.
It was also interesting to see how the cookbooks broke down by each region of the United States:
Midwest: Magnolia Table, The Unofficial Harry Potter Cookbook, The Whole30 Cookbook
Northeast: The Joy of Cooking
South: Whiskey in a Teacup, Magnolia Table, The Unofficial Harry Potter Cookbook, Sweet Potato Soul, 10 Day Green Smoothie Cleanse
West: Thug Kitchen, The Whole30 Cookbook
There are some definite trends between the regions, but all in all, each region has at least one unique cookbook that it finds the most appealing.
We wanted to break our data down even further to find out what the most popular cookbook is in the country by the count of states. It turns out that the healthy trend is here to stay – the Whole30 cookbook was the top pick for 8 states, which is not entirely shocking. We found that around 18% of states searched for Whole30 guides and cookbooks more often than other cookbooks. Following closely behind that are Magnolia Table, Thug Kitchen, and the Unofficial Harry Potter cookbook.
Oh, joy! We found The Joy of Cooking by Julia Child, which is the most searched cookbook in two states, particularly interesting. Originally published almost 90 years ago, Child’s cookbook is still inspiring cooks to make incredible food in their homes. It goes to show that even though new cookbooks seem to be coming out every day, you can never really get away from the basics. Here’s hoping that it continues to be popular for another 90 years!
The next time you’re throwing a dinner party, you should consider donning your dining room table with some of the recipes found in the cookbooks above. Is your favorite cookbook included in our list? Be sure to share this blog post and let us know!
