Most Popular Dog Breeds By State
We love dogs. Like we really love them. So much, in fact, that we even let them up on our sofas (they need a comfy place to rest too!).
Because we live in a nation of dog lovers, we wondered just who’s top dog when it comes to America’s favorite breed? And which states like which dog breeds the most.
To find this out we used 2019 Google Trends data for the top 50 most popular breeds in the country according to the American Kennel Club to determine each state’s most popular dog breed.
California and Texas residents are in love with the French Bulldog, whereas people in Nebraska and Oregon must be fans of the Queen of England because they prefer the Pembroke Welsh Corgi.
Hounds are a popular breed across the country, with the Bloodhound being the most popular breed in Alaska, Idaho, and Kentucky. The Basset Hound, on the other hand, is the most popular breed in Arkansas and Oklahoma – maybe they like Droopy as much as we do?
Vermonters must have grand ambitions of mountain climbing because the Bernese Mountain Dog climbed into the top spot for that state, whereas Mississippi residents must love hot dogs due to the cheeky Dachshund being the most popular breed there.
Little lions seem to be all the rage in Alabama, Arizona, New Mexico, and North Carolina because the Shih Tzu is the most popular pooch in all four states.
So which breed is top dog overall? That would be the family-friendly Rottweiler with this breed being the most-searched breed in seven states. The lovable Golden Retriever comes in second with 4 states, and finally, coming in third, we have the adorable Shih Tzu with this breed being the most popular in 4 states also, but with a lower overall search volume.
If you’re looking for a dog, you can be sure you’ll have a best friend no matter what breed you pick. And, if you’re as keen to let them up on the sofa as we are, do we have a sofa for you!
