The Most Popular Harry Potter Books and Spells
Wingardium Leviosa, Avada Kedavra, Expecto Patronum, and Stupefy. These words may sound like gibberish to many of you, but to Harry Potter fans, they spark images of beloved characters and events from J.K. Rowling’s magical series of books. Over the course of the 7 books, she created a magical universe, leaving millions of readers across the world longing for their Hogwarts letter to arrive in the mail. It’s been over 10 years since the final installment of the series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, was released in July 2007, but the magic and enthusiasm around Harry Potter lives on.
As big Harry Potter fans, we found ourselves wondering which of the Harry Potter books and spells are the most popular across the U.S.
Using Google Trends, we looked at search data from the last 12 months for each of the 7 Harry Potter books to determine which is the most searched for in each state. We also looked at search data from the last 12 months for the 100+ spells used in Harry Potter books to determine which is the most searched for in each state, each region, and overall in the U.S. Read on to see all of the magical results!
The Most Searched-For Harry Potter Book in Every State
Each Harry Potter fan secretly has a favorite book in the series (I’m partial to the Order of the Phoenix myself) and it appears every state does as well. All of the 7 books are represented somewhere on the map, but the clear nationwide favorite is the final book. The Deathly Hallows was the top-searched book in 28 states. We’re pleased to see that people in Tennessee and Utah may be experiencing the magic of Hogwarts for the first time – these states’ most searched book is the first in the series, The Sorcerer’s Stone.
The Most Searched-For Harry Potter Spells in Every State
With so many spells used throughout the course of the series, it’s easy for even the most diehard Harry Potter fan to lose track of what each one means. It was interesting to see what spells people were turning to Google to search for. Similar to the books, there is quite a variety of spells across the country – 28 different spells are represented in the results.
Interestingly, the top-searched spell in the highest number of states is one of the more basic ones in the series and one with a pretty intuitive meaning. Lumos, the spell used to turn a wizard’s wand into a lighted torch, was the most-searched spell in 8 states: Alaska, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wyoming.
If you’re familiar with the Harry Potter books, you know the Unforgivable Curses are usually associated with evil and dark wizards. The evilest of them all, Avada Kedavra, is the killing spell and the spell used by Lord Voldemort to kill Harry’s parents. Surprisingly, the 3 Unforgivable Curses – Avada Kedavra, Crucio, and Imperio – were the most-searched spells in a total of 8 states.
If you haven’t experienced the magic of Hogwarts yet, we’d encourage you to join the masses of Googlers looking for these books and do a quick search for the first book. We guarantee you won’t regret flipping open that first page!
