We’re nearing the end of another year which means it’s time to reflect on everything that made 2018 great. What better way to do so than by taking a look at the TV shows and movies that kept us entertained? It’s estimated that, on average, Americans watch over 5 hours of TV every day. In light of that, we’ll look at the shows, both new and established, that many of us watched. And with all of the big box office hits this year, you may be surprised by the most popular movie seen in the US this year.
To determine your favorites, we turned to IMDB for lists of the top 50 grossing movies as well as the top 50 new TV series released between January 1st and December 31st of 2018. Next, we used Google to gather the list of most popular TV shows overall. We then cross-referenced those favorites with data collected from Google Trends in 2018 to determine a clear winner from each state across the US. From there we tallied the winners to determine which movie, TV series, and new TV series was the most popular across the US this year.
The Most Popular 2018 Movie Releases
The First Purge was the box office favorite across 9 states. The film is the 4th installment and prequel to the Purge trilogy. It gives fans a look into the events that took place during the first ever Purge and how the government came to adopt the annual event where all crime is considered legal. The movie stars Y’lan Noel from the HBO series Insecure as well as Lex Scott Davis and Marisa Tomei.
Runners-up in the most popular movie category include Deadpool 2 and A Star is Born, which tied for second place, carrying the top spot in six states each.
The Top-Searched Popular TV Shows
The most popular TV show is actually a tie between NBC’s This Is Us and the CW’s The 100. Both were a favorite in 5 states, however regionally, This is Us was more popular across the Northeast, while The 100 took the lead in the Midwest. They may share first place, but the two shows feature very different genres and storylines.
This Is Us is a dramatic comedy that stars Mandy Moore, Milo Ventimiglia, and Sterling K. Brown. The series explores the family dynamic, the similarities, and differences between each member, and how they grow throughout the years. Dan Fogelman, the story’s creator, uses flashbacks, mixed with the present to keep the audience engaged. The cast and show are no strangers to award season where they have received 102 nominations and have won 35 awards since 2016.
The 100 has also had its share of nominations and wins as well. This science-fiction drama features a bit more action and fantasy as it explores a story where humans are forced to return to the Earth after floating in space on a space station for nearly 100 years. The story follows Clarke Griffin (Eliza Taylor), Bellamy Blake (Bob Morley), and many others as they face the political, environmental, and emotional challenges presented by a post-apocalyptic world.
The Most Popular New TV Shows of 2018
And last, but not least, we have the most popular new TV series. 2018 featured a number of new shows, but The Resident was the top dog, taking the lead in 9 states. This medical drama follows Conrad Hawkins (Matt Czuchry), a senior resident internist, as well as “Nic” Nevin (Emily VanCamp), and Devon Pravesh (Manish Dayal) as they navigate their roles in emergency medicine at Chastain Park Memorial Hospital. Their story brings to light cases of malpractice and medical ethics seen in the healthcare industry. Over 7 million viewers tuned in between the launch of the first season which aired in January 2018 and the second, which concluded at the end of November. The jury’s still out on whether or not the series will be renewed for a third season.
We’ve seen tons of new movies and TV shows over the past year, but there were a few that stood out among the rest. A thriller movie was top at the box office, while dramas were a favorite at home. No matter what you prefer to watch, there are plenty of entertaining options to choose from above, but if you’ve seen all that 2018 had to offer, don’t fret, 2019 is just a few days away!
