Which Destinations Have the Most Unique Vacation Rentals?
At Joybird, we believe that home should never cease to be your happy place. From the hand-picked furniture and decor to your family-photo-covered walls, there’s really no other place designed with you and your family in mind. In other words, there’s no place like home.
But as much as we relish coming home at the end of a long hard day, even the most committed homebodies desire a break from their ‘normal’ every now and then. For some, this might mean a week away at the beach or a trip to the mountains. For others, it might look like a cross country adventure. However, no matter what kind of vacation you’re envisioning for your PTO, it’s important to keep an open mind – especially when it comes to lodging. Because you never know if you’re one unconventional vacation away from falling in love with a treehouse, yurt, or castle.
So, in the spirit of keeping you on your toes this summer, we decided to look into the best cities for summer travels based on, you guessed it: the most unconventional vacation rentals available. To do this, we pulled data from Airbnb to determine both the number of active listings in each city as well as the number of “unique” homes listed. From there, we calculated the percentage of listings in each city that, according to Airbnb, qualify as unique (think barns, boats, trains, yurts, treehouses, igloos, and other equally eye-catching rentals.) In a nutshell, unique listings are those that stand out from more common rental offerings, like single bedrooms, homes, townhomes, and apartments.
We did all of this with the ultimate goal of providing you the details you need to explore the unconventional on your next vacation.
When it comes to planning your first unconventional vacation, it’s important to know that not all cities are equal. On the contrary, some have far more unique listings to offer than others. Which begs the question: How do you narrow your search?
Well, you don’t – we do. And in doing so, we found that California is probably the best place to start, as it houses six of the top ten cities for unconventional vacation rentals. The only question is, do you prefer Chula Vista, Riverside, Anaheim, Santa Ana, Irvine or Fremont? Though your chances of finding the perfect listing are best in Chula Vista, where 75% of rental listings are considered unique, you still have relatively high odds in these other Californian cities.
Not California dreaming? Don’t worry. There are plenty of other fantastic cities across the country that have heaps of unconventional vacation rentals available, like Chesapeake, VA, Aurora, CO, and Arlington, TX, to name a few.
Now that you know where to search, you’re probably wondering what to expect in terms of listing type. And fortunately, no matter how quirky your preferences, there’s a rental out there with your name on it. But it’s worth noting that your taste in rentals will likely affect your destination.
If you want to try out Farm Stay life, for instance, there’s no better place than Portland, Oregon where you’ll have your choice of 51 Farm Stays. But if yurts are more your style, you’re better off booking your next vacation in Anaheim or Irvine, CA, where you’ll have 11 yurt rentals to sift through.
If you’re from the Northeastern part of the country, however, and have always dreamt of living like a royal, you might be looking for some ritzier options…like a castle! And if so, you’re in luck. Rochester, NY, is basically the U.S. hub of castle rentals, so you’ll have sixteen to choose from.
Looking for a more casual experience? Why not try cave life out for a week or two in Atlanta? Sure, it might not be quite as cushy as a castle in Rochester, but how many people can say they’ve vacationed in a cave?
If castles aren’t really your thing and caves are a bit too unconventional for your liking, a tiny house rental could be the perfect compromise.
Interested? Fortunately, you’ll have a variety of options, geographically speaking. From California to New York, and several places in between, there’s no shortage of tiny house rentals in the U.S. That being said, there are areas that have more tiny house rentals than others. Southern California, for example, has an abundance of tiny houses. Whether you prefer to stay in Irvine, Los Angeles, Long Beach, or San Diego, there’s a tiny house rental with your name on it.
Now that you have the scoop on unconventional rentals, it’s time to plan your next vacation. And ultimately, no matter where the travel bug leads you, we’ll be rooting for you!
