Since we are a part of the interior design industry, we’re always looking for new sources of design inspiration in our homes. Our favorite places to turn for ongoing ideas are home improvement shows, and luckily there is no shortage of great ones to watch these days. Whether it’s Chip & Joanna, Jonathan & Drew, or Paige & Ty, we can’t get enough of the home transformation journeys that are on our screens every week. It’s been reported that 58% of American homeowners plan to spend money on home improvement this year, so we know we’re not the only ones tuning in to these popular shows for ideas.
With the growth of home improvement shows over the years, there now seems to be something for everyone and every project you could imagine. Working on a master bath overhaul? Bath Crashers might provide you with the perfect idea for your vanities. Do you have a passion for flipping houses? Binge watching a Flip or Flop marathon would be the perfect activity for your next lazy Saturday. Even iconic 90s rapper Vanilla Ice has caught the reno fever – his home-flipping show The Vanilla Ice Project debuted in 2010 and is now in its eighth season. With all of these options to choose from, we decided to find out which shows Americans considered to be among their favorites.
We turned to Google Trends to explore the most popular home improvement shows in the U.S. Using state-to-state search data for the top-rated home improvement shows, we determined which show was the most searched in each state over the past 12 months.
The Most Popular Home Improvement Show in Each State
The results of the Google Trends analysis revealed that there is a quite a bit of variety in Americans’ home improvement favorites from state to state. 28 states’ favorite show was unique to that state. There appear to be many aspiring house flippers in the U.S. based on the results – 24% of states favored shows focused on house flipping.
One of the most surprising takeaways from our study concerned Fixer Upper. While it was the favorite home renovation show in Alabama, Kansas, Montana, and North Carolina, it did not take the top spot in Texas where it is filmed. Texans’ favorite is First Time Flippers, the show that chronicles the trials and successes of virgin house flippers. Though we feel very confident it would be the winner if only Waco residents were included in the study!
The Most Popular Home Improvement Shows in the U.S.
Next, we tallied up the how many states each show was the most popular in to determine the nationwide favorites. Tarek and Christina El Moussa’s Flip or Flop took the top spot with 6 states. With more people getting into the house flipping game than ever before, we weren’t too surprised by this result. Though we are surprised that Tarek and Christina always seem to manage to sell their flips for a profit, which isn’t necessarily the most accurate portrayal of the house flipping business.
Also not too surprising was the second show on the list – Fixer Upper, the favorite in 4 states. Chip and Joanna Gaines have taken the interior design industry by storm since the show debuted in 2013. The show’s popularity lives on even after its final episodes aired in April, with all seasons available to stream on Hulu. Joanna’s use of shiplap has inspired redesign efforts all over the country and their line for Target, Magnolia Home, seems to only continue to grow in popularity.
Breaking Down the Networks of America’s Favorite Home Improvement Shows
Lastly, we took a look at which networks were responsible for providing us with all of these beloved home improvement shows. HGTV is the home to 59% of states’ favorites, followed by the DIY Network with 14%.
