Velvet has been one of the biggest trends in furniture upholstery this year, and there is no sign of this luxurious fabric losing its luster. But being a unique weave, there are some very specific details to know when caring for your velvet-clad furniture.
Velvet, while beautiful to behold and soft to the touch, requires a certain amount of gentle care to keep it clean and looking like new. Our Joybird velvets – Dunhill, Royale, and Bella – are absolutely stunning in any space, so long as they are cared for properly. However, once you know the easy, three-step recipe for caring for velvet upholstery, it’s easy to keep your velvet sofas and chairs in fantastic condition for years to come.
Step One: Vacuum Along Nape
On average, doing this one step weekly is usually enough to keep your velvet pieces looking clean and fresh. Just remember to vacuum in one motion, always going in one direction. If you run the vacuum back and forth, like how you normally would on carpet, you could potentially weaken the fibers of the velvet, causing it to lose its texture and even create bald patches over time.
Also be sure to use a lower vacuum setting – most models have an upholstery setting – to ensure the suction isn’t too strong.
Step Two: Spot Clean
As mentioned above, you only need to move on to this second step when you actually have spots on the velvet that need special attention. Create a mixture of lemon juice and baking soda to use for the spot cleaning. After testing the mix on the back or underside of one of the cushions, use a soft cloth to scoop the solution and place directly on the spot you’re treating. Never pour the mixture directly on the velvet, as you’d run the risk of it spreading and actually causing a bigger stain.
Use the cleaning solution sparingly, as you gently wipe away any stains. And be sure to wipe away any excess with a clean, soft cloth.
Step Three: Allow to Dry Completely
The final step for treating your velvet furniture is to let the cleaning solution dry completely. Point a fan in the direction of your velvet sofa and allow the mixture to work its magic.
When you return, your sofa or chair should look like new, sans spots and soft as ever!
