When the Riverhead Books team moved into their new office, they knew they needed a change. Follow along as we detail their redesign and prepare to be inspired!
Riverhead Books is a publishing company that specializes in producing bestselling fiction and nonfiction books. Over the last 25 years, the Riverhead team has dedicated themselves to the literary industry to support and publish works from bestselling authors. Some of their most notable authors include Khaled Hosseini, Jacqueline Woodson, James McBride, Anne Lamott, Elizabeth Gilbert, and Marlon James.
Riverhead recently moved its offices to the heart of midtown Manhattan. The office itself is a Contemporary glass highrise, so it has plenty of inviting natural light. The actual design of the space, however, left something to be desired. Before, their conference room was a sterile area with white walls, gray carpets, and a dropped ceiling. It was the opposite of the bold and colorful aesthetic that the company emulates. Jynne Martins, Associate Publisher and Director of Publicity, and her team decided that they needed to change up their space to reflect their brand.
“Our team knew we wanted to make the Riverhead Books conference room feel special. We use that room all day, every day, to host visiting authors, have pizza-fueled brainstorming sessions, conduct weekly art meetings, have sitdowns with potential future authors, and of course, celebrate our New York Times bestsellers cupcake and champagne parties. Given Riverhead’s bold and colorful aesthetic, we wanted this shared space to feel celebratory, welcoming, and warm.” – Jynne Martin
The team thought about the type of environment they wanted to work in and decided to flip the idea of a typical conference room on its head. Their office space was collaborative and fun, so they wanted that sense of openness to flow through to their meeting space. To achieve that, they did away with the standard conference room decor in favor of sofas, chairs, ottomans, and soft furnishings. They used a variety of Joybird pieces to get this look, including the Hughes Leather Sectional, Hughes Sofa, Hughes Leather Sofa, and Stowe Sofa. The team loved the craftsmanship of the furniture and it inspired them to sit together and collaborate in a way they weren’t able to before.
“Riverhead strives to treat each of our books as a bespoke art piece. We see a philosophical kinship in Joybird’s focus on craftsmanship, beauty, color, and quality. Joybird’s furniture has allowed us to completely reconceptualize the prototypical conference room. Our pieces give us a more inclusive, inviting, and ultimately, productive workspace.” – Jynne Martin
Now that the redesign is complete, the Riverhead Books conference room is “a physical manifestation of [their] mission statement and entering it feels like entering a lively, creative space where anything is possible.” We love what they’ve done with their office (and we think the office kitties love it too!). We asked Jynne what advice she would give to someone updating their office space and this is what she had to say:
