Down With Love is a movie that was released in 2003, but has all the earmarks of the 1960’s Doris Day-Rock Hudson classics about the battle of the sexes. Set in 1962 New York, the film is a treasure trove of brightly colored, mid-century, space-age-styled sets in widescreen, cinemascopic-perfection!
As a furniture company known for its mid-century styles, watching Down With Love is something of a treat for our designers. So many of the looks portrayed in the film are similar to the pieces we craft for our customers every day. And the sets are truly a highlight of the film – integral to the story and shown off in every scene.
The story, costumes, sets, and even the look of the film are meant to be a recreation of the popular sexual comedies that were so popular in the early 1960s. It’s a battle of the sexes, with gender roles being questioned, and euphemisms baked into nearly every line. Renae Zellwegger serves as our strong-willed Doris Day character, and Ewan McGregor fills the usual Rock Hudson role. In addition to their fantastic on-screen chemistry, the pair both have absolutely stunning mid-century apartments that are just as telling of their characters as any other element of the movie.
Here are our tips for snagging the style of these two sets – Barbara Novak’s candy-colored, pristine penthouse, and Catcher Block’s fully-loaded, love-snaring bachelor pad.
First, let’s look at Barbara’s place. This mid-century “dreamsicle” is mostly comprised of clean whites, with pops turquoise and a plethora of pink to match Barbara’s wardrobe. The sunken living room comes complete with a firepit surrounded by a bright pink curved sofa. A pair of chairs makes this a perfect place to lounge with friends, while geometric details in the abstract art and brightly colored throw pillows complete the mod look. Create a similar vibe with either our Braxton Round Corner Sectional or our Eastwood Round Corner Sectional in Key Largo Bubble Gun or Royale Blush.
A cream shag rug like our Ely, together with a pair of Emma Swivel Chairs, and a sleek bar cart, like our Felix, achieves the sophisticated, yet playful aesthetic of this charming apartment. The only other thing you need is the retro New York skyline out the window (and you’re on your own for that!)
In terms of Catcher Block’s bachelor pad, the feel of the space is engrained in dark woods, sophisticated navys, and clean lines. Where Barbara’s apartment is all curves, Catcher’s apartment is all angles.
Multifunction is key in this modern den, so when recreating this look, opting for a sleeper sofa is a must. Try something akin to our Eliot Sleeper Sofa in Indigo Bentley. And for the supporting, wood-heavy chairs within the space, look no further than the Niles Chair or our classic Soto for an authentically Catcher-Block-look. Bring in a solid coffee table, like the Webb Coffee Table, and an impressive, wood media wall unit like our Justice collection, and you’re golden!
With interior design as sleek and stylish as this, all it will take is “ten minutes” to impress the love of your life!
