Spending time with friends was always the best when we were young, so we want to share some of our favorite slumber party traditions with you.
One of the best things about being a kid is attending a slumber party with all of your closest friends. When we were kids, slumber parties were the social events of the school year. Even though kids spend a lot of time together during and after school, getting to see friends on a purely social level feels completely different and undoubtedly more exciting.
Because a lot of members of the Joybird team remember slumber parties very fondly, we sat down to reminisce about some of our favorite moments from them. To our surprise, many of our activities overlapped despite us all being from different regions, ages, and cultures. In light of this, we wanted to share our favorite slumber party traditions with you to see just how universal these fun experiences are.
Watching Scary Movies
Watching scary movies isn’t the most fun activity in the world, but it somehow became a great idea when we were with our friends. Even though we were all scared, we would put on brave faces and huddle together to watch horror flicks. Some classics that we watched when we were way too young included Poltergeist, The Shining, The Ring, The Exorcist, and Halloween. In case you were wondering, yes, we did all have nightmares those nights and some of our friends even called their moms to come and pick them up.
Playing Fun Games
Games were another very common slumber party tradition in the office. All of us loved playing video games, board games, or games like hide-and-seek. We’d all stay up late playing them, much to the chagrin of our parents, and we would inevitably be tired in the morning, but all the fun, fights, and wagers were all worth it in the end.
Pulling Sneaky Pranks
Kids are generally pretty sneaky, so when a group of them get together, they are bound to pull pranks. When we were young, it didn’t even matter who got pranked as long as our hijinks worked in our favor and we could break down in giggles over them. Some of our favorite pranks to orchestrate were crank calling, and, of course, TPing a neighbor’s house. We hope that kids these days are over these silly tricks because, in hindsight, they weren’t that funny. But, at least we had fun doing it, right?
Flexing Our Culinary Muscles (Poorly)
Slumber parties and junk food absolutely go hand-in-hand. For some reason, our parents trusted us with copious amounts of sugar AND allowed us to have free reign of the kitchen. Most of the time, we would only eat the junk food that was given to us, but on special nights, we would try and make our own culinary creations. They always turned out to be disgusting, but it was never about actually making something palatable. It was about making amazing memories.
Camping in the Backyard
As kids, getting even a small taste of independence was a highlight of our young lives, so when we were allowed to pitch a tent outside and sleep under the stars, it made the night even better. Hearing the sounds of the outdoors and sleeping all together in one place (that wasn’t our living rooms) felt really cool, much more intimate, and, of course, incredibly fun.
