Meet a creative young family in Orange County living inside a charming 1950s bungalow filled with artistic flair and playfulness fit for their two toddlers.
Though no rolling hills or roaming animals are in sight — unless you count rocking horses— “The Ranch” is what native Midwesterners Angie and Mark call the home where they’re raising their two sons, Andy, 2, and Otto, 10 months. “I grew up in Wyoming and there are ranches everywhere,” begins Angie, “So this is our California ranch.” Angie, a print and product designer for Oh Joy!, and Mark, an elementary school music teacher, first met on the University of South Dakota’s swim team, “I was a swimmer, he was a diver, and we fell in love,” Angie says sweetly. “When we graduated, we moved away from the snow to sunny Southern California.”
Last year the couple purchased their first home, a quaint three-bedroom, one-bathroom 1950s bungalow on a quiet street lined with Seussian-like pine trees and a short drive to Huntington Beach. On The Ranch, kid’s toys and Angie’s artwork coexist happily with sophisticated pieces and musical instruments for impromptu gigs by Mark and Andy. “I fill the house with color and he fills the house with sound!” Angie says laughingly.
I see our house almost like a blank canvas. I love pops of color, adding texture and putting patterns on pattern.
On the outside, their home is a classic California suburban home, but the inside is completely their own. The interior is bright, open, and colorfully decorated with pieces inspired by a variety of eras and artists, including Angie’s own artwork. The atmosphere is quirky and fun, but also functional. Angie has filled the space with pieces that have meaning and tell their story – from Andy’s scribbles, to the ever-changing gallery wall – snapshots of their lives are everywhere. Living room play often extends to the patio, and the overall decor and design is perfectly conducive to a young and active family.
