The Jungalow trend is perhaps one of the most sought-after styles in modern interior design. Looking to harness the look in your own home? Read on to see how to get the look with just a few key Joybird pieces…
The term “Jungalow” is a popular design portmanteau that combines the concept of a jungle and a bungalow. First coined by blogger, designer, author, and all-around online super-star Justina Blakeney, the Jungalow aesthetic is one that harnesses lush fabrics, wild patterns, natural motifs, tribal details and lots and lots of big leafy plants! The result is a cozy, bohemian space that exudes warmth and serenity. Who wouldn’t want to come home to a Jungalow?
While there are lots of things to consider before bringing greenery into your home, when it comes to the Jungalow look, the more plants, the better! For our Jungalow living room setup, we used an assortment of leafy palms, ferns, dracaenas, and philodendrons from Rolling Greens Nursery in Culver City. We punctuated the dense foliage with a single monstera leaf and air plant strategically placed on the coffee table.
There are really no rules when it comes to the types of plants you bring into your space, so experiment with whatever greenery fits your lifestyle and makes you feel relaxed and happy. Try to curate a collection of plants in various shades of green, assorted sizes, and a range of leaf-types. This will add dimension and give your Jungalow a more wild and natural look.
With this aesthetic, texture is paramount – and the juxtaposition of different materials is the key to pulling it off! As such, we combined our plush velvet-esque Royale Evergreen fabric with dark woods, woven accents, and clay pottery. The angular lines and hairpin legs of our Brennan Coffee Table create a perfect contrast to the classic silhouette and luxurious tufting of our Liam Sofa.
Add height to your Jungalow with a stylish, yet understated console. We absolutely love how our McKenzie 3-Drawer Console looks in this space. It’s not only perfectly on-trend, but it’s also a lifesaver when it comes to storage solutions! Next, we continued to vary the textures of the design by adding lighting fixtures in both glass and woven materials.
Perhaps the most important design detail with the Jungalow look is planters and plant holders. As foliage is the staple of the trend, make this decor item a top priority, and have fun with it! There are so many innovative ways to display your plants, so approach this design element with some creativity and an open mind. For our little Jungalow, we filled in all the gaps between the furniture with sleek modern clay pots in shades of gray and beige. Then for our Jungalow focal point, we used Woolly Pocket’s easy-to-hang three pocket vertical wall planters above the sofa.
A final finishing touch essential for every Jungalow is lots and lots of layers! From chunky pillows to woven rugs and various throws, don’t be shy about augmenting your space with a wide assortment of accessories. It’s the secret ingredient for nailing a truly cozy, boho aesthetic.
